Note: this blog post is for the Python Pune meetup happening on 4th April 2014.

Kindly follow the following steps to install Python 2.7.x on your system.

  • Installation

    • Windows 8 : Follow this blog
    • Windows 7 : Follow this blog
    • Linux : Typically all linux distributions come pre-installed with the python binary.
    • OS X : OS X comes pre-installed with a version of python 2.7.x. If you wish to upgrade to the latest python 2.7.x, install homebrew and then run

      $ brew install python

  • Verification of installation

    • Goto the terminal / shell on your computer and run python, this should output something similar to:

      $ python
      Python 2.7.6 (default, Feb 23 2014, 19:39:28)
      [GCC 4.2.1 Compatible Apple LLVM 5.0 (clang-500.2.79)] on darwin
      Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
      >>>

    • Then run the following code:

      $ python
      Python 2.7.6 (default, Feb 23 2014, 19:39:28)
      [GCC 4.2.1 Compatible Apple LLVM 5.0 (clang-500.2.79)] on darwin
      Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
      >>> import sys
      >>> print sys.platform
      posix
      >>>

    You should see the name of your OS as the output. In my case, since I am running this on an OS X machine, I see the reply as posix on your system you should see something from this list

  • I would recommend all of you to install PyCharm CE, since it is OS independent and all of us will have the same IDE. Kindly download the PyCharm Community Edition only. To download click here.

With this, you should be equipped for the Python 101 tutorial.
